Triggering lucidity
I became aware of the previous song stopping abruptly. Not from the song that started in the minute above. A flurry of eye movements can be seen in the middle of the snapshot with traces of another one of those 30 second waves in the first half.

According to a team of neuroscientists at UW there are:

Neurons in the mammalian brainstem that focus exclusively on new, novel sounds, helping humans ignore ongoing, predictable sounds. The neurons are located under the cortex in a part of the brain called the inferior colliculus. These neurons provide a unique model that can be used in the future to explore some of the neural mechanisms underlying memory, prediction and selective attention.

So instead of just introducing new signals to attain lucidity, it may be worth further investigation to trigger lucidity by removing persistent signals…

Eye Movements Dream
The audio track played after six blinks and the wave can be seen at the end again, as previously noted: 2012-06-14 – Aware-Wave

2012-08-12 – EEG Blinks

Rapid Eye Movements Electroencephalograph
After a few nights of recording brainwaves from the NeuroSky MindWave and some advice from a cognitive scientist, I was able to write an algorithm to detect REM sleep from the raw EEG data.

Thirteen blinks can be seen in the minute featured above. They look uncannily similar to the rapid eye movements previously recorded with the halograph FM. The audio track was triggered five times throughout the night and interrupted REM sleep at least once.

Also of interest is that the attention graph tends to spike during REM sleep, when the meditation graph tends to trough.

EEG REM Sleep NeuroSky MindWave
NeuroSky was kind enough to send me a MindWave EEG headset and will be making Lucid Scribe available from their store

I was also asked to consult on The Numinous Place and might even be featured in it…

The hour featured above shows some interesting patterns that might be indicative of REM sleep that I have yet to investigate.

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep
The audio tracks played three times during the night but ended the dreams each time. I woke up feeling very refreshed with the third song playing. Well over a dozen rapid eye movements can be seen in the featured minute.

Vibrations Before a Dream
The minute before this one was full of movement. Another ten seconds of the vibrations can be seen here followed by five blinks that caused the audio track to play.

2012-06-14 – Aware Wave

Eye Movement Wave Waking Up
The audio track played after six blinks and woke me up. A wave can be seen at the end that I have noticed a few times before when waking up and remaining perfectly still. I waited patiently for the visions to return to no avail.

2012-05-29 – Heart Off – REM On

Heartbeat REM Sleep Graph
A clear heartbeat reading was interrupted by the onset of REM sleep which in turn was interrupted by the audio track. The heartbeat can be seen in the first half of the minute above and five blinks can be seen in the second half. The audio track played in the following minute and stopped the blinking.

Audio Tracks During REM Sleep
Four tracks played within six minutes: two of the tracks can be seen in the featured minute and I distinctly remember when the second one played. The rush from knowing that the world around me was a dream can clearly be seen in the seconds that followed. I tried to control my eye movements for the first time, but the effect I was hoping for did not make it across.

Another track played in the morning and woke me up during REM sleep, feeling very refreshed.

Preparation: chewed a few calea leaves.

Rapid Eye Movement Chart Blinks
14 blinks can be seen in the minute featured above. This is right before the audio track played in the next minute and ended the dream, rather abruptly.
