REM Sleep After Ninety Minutes
The first audio track played exactly 90 minutes into the session and the movements lasted for the duration of the song. I was expecting the vocals to kick and was disappointed when they didn’t. I will have to cut them in as soon as possible. The second audio track played 65 minutes after that; six blinks can be seen in the minute above before it woke me up.

Sleep and Consciousness Research Graph
First night using the FIELD mouse (and that pun will probably never get old). I had my mouse duct taped to my hand, and I messed around with it for like an hour and a half trying to get it comfortable. Finally I did, and I ended falling asleep around 2:30, forgetting to actually hold down the button.

However upon waking I discovered that I held down the button 3 times for a very long time. Once from 3:04am to 3:45am, after that there was some small movement and then another click just long enough to trigger it again. Next one was from 5:53am to 6:34 (featured), another flurry of movement. And the last one was from 7:09 to 7:25, just before I woke up, the movement was delayed by 30+ seconds this time.

If any of those were from me dreaming, I didn’t experience/remember any of them. It’s quite likely that I was just laying on my hand or something. I also woke with my headset unplugged so the delay in movement on the third “dream” could have been from that. Though just a note, if these were dreams, it would mean that the songs were triggered just after they ended, so it might be a good idea to have a version where the song is triggered after oh 10-20 minutes of holding down the mouse.

I woke up feeling very refreshed for only having had 5 hours of sleep, so I’ll definitely be doing this again, hoping for better results though.

2012-10-05 – Filtered Out

REM Sleep Graph
The respiratory artifact filter has been ignoring too many events that could have had potential, so I have some more tweaking to do. In the minute above there are over two dozen movements that failed to trigger the audio track.

Rapid Eye Movements
The audio track played after a series of more conventional and more rapid eye movements that I will now be focusing on with the help of the new respiratory artifact filter.

Eye Movements Dream
The audio track played after six blinks and the wave can be seen at the end again, as previously noted: 2012-06-14 – Aware-Wave.

2012-08-12 – EEG Blinks

Rapid Eye Movements Electroencephalograph
After a few nights of recording brainwaves from the NeuroSky MindWave and some advice from a cognitive scientist, I was able to write an algorithm to detect REM sleep from the raw EEG data.

Thirteen blinks can be seen in the minute featured above. They look uncannily similar to the rapid eye movements previously recorded with the halograph FM. The audio track was triggered five times throughout the night and interrupted REM sleep at least once.

Also of interest is that the attention graph tends to spike during REM sleep, when the meditation graph tends to trough.

2012-08-08 – Brain Waves

EEG REM Sleep NeuroSky MindWave
NeuroSky was kind enough to send me a MindWave EEG headset and will be making Lucid Scribe available from their store!

I was also asked to consult on The Numinous Place and might even be featured in it…

The hour featured above shows some interesting patterns that might be indicative of REM sleep that I have yet to investigate.

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep
The audio tracks played three times during the night but ended the dreams each time. I woke up feeling very refreshed with the third song playing. Well over a dozen rapid eye movements can be seen in the featured minute.

2012-07-01 – Waves of Meridian

Ocean Waves Graph
I was lucky enough to record a session on a yacht! Around twelve waves can be seen in the minute above. The sensors were maxed out for the first hour while the engine was running, but the waves became clearly visible as soon as it was turned off in the second hour. I managed to catch some sleep and record a few very faint eye movements just before the battery array ran empty.

Vibrations Before a Dream
The minute before this one was full of movement. Another ten seconds of the vibrations can be seen here followed by five blinks that caused the audio track to play.
